Before I knew my current wife, I always considered one girl "the one that got away". She had my heart completely at that time and I knew it. Every time we were together, the heat dialed up to 100 one a scale of 1-10. Her name was Kathy and that's all the further I'll go on that one. However, I was thinking about her just as I was dozing off one night many years later and probably 95% of these lyrics just kind of showed up in my head along with the tune. Nice when they just come together like that. I was just kind of wondering at that moment what it might be like to run into her again and whether or not those sparks would still be there. Needless to say, I got out of bed and put it all together right then and there. Didn't want to lose the inspiration!
Lyrics
Was to give him a look to knock him off his feet
But it wasn’t long before I learned all the other things
That made me fall in love with you that made my life complete
When you saw me leaning against that rail
The man with the wind to fill your sail
I’d be that man who’s whose love would never wane
But it grew into a sad, sad smile on this old man’s face
The one time I really fell in love, I had no clue of what to do
Both fear and love were running around my brain
The feelings that I had for you were keeping me from telling you
My thoughts all scrambled in that hurricane
If I had another chance to prove
All the love I had for you was true
I’d take that chance regardless of the pain
And one day you’d see a tear roll down this old man’s face
The loss I felt when you walked away, I had to shove it all away
I locked it in a corner of my heart
If you stepped back into my life, would that old love cut like a knife
Once again to tear my soul apart
If I were to see you again, would the sparks still fly the same as then
Would it be as easy to fall in love again
The years have seemed to tumble by
Do you think you’d find this old man’s smile
As attractive as the one you loved back then
Would you take a good long look at me
Still see the man that you once loved
Or have those memories all died without a trace
Would you still see a young man’s smile in this old man’s face
Would you still see a young man’s smile in this old man’s face
